By definition, crude oil and natural gas are the raw materials of the petrochemical industry, with inert gases such as N2 and CO2 already used on a large-scale during their extraction. The processing of crude oil to the desired end products involves several steps. Again, gases from Messer are used in many of these process steps.

As far back as 5000 BC copper and gold were being used to cast artefacts; and iron casting was started in 500 BC. Today, non-ferrous foundries worldwide annually produce around 20 m tonnes; and grey cast iron, malleable cast iron, spheroidal graphite iron and cast steel foundries approx. 70 m tonnes of raw and finished components for the automobile, engineering, shipbuilding, hydraulics and construction industries.

Here we will be referring to iron and steel foundries. The main raw material for products is recycled scrap metal and pig iron.

Lead is manufactured over several steps: The starting material, primary lead (lead-containing ores) or secondary lead (recycled, lead-containing waste, in particular spent batteries) is first prepared by roasting and/or physical processes. Subsequently, the starting materials are reduced in a melting furnace and freed from accompanying substances, whereby different melting processes are used depending on the starting material. The melted material is further freed from contamination in a refining process and poured into moulds, it is then available as raw lead for further processing.

Petrochemistry is the production of chemical products from natural gas and suitable fractions of petroleum. The central process here is steam cracking, which supplies the most important petrochemical raw materials (mainly ethylene and propylene).These short-chain olefins are then further processed through a variety of chemical reactions to the raw materials and products of daily life. The BTX aromatics obtained from refinery processes also play an important role as raw materials.

The quality requirements on process water however may differ widely and accordingly also the treatment steps providing a specific process water do. The industrial gases nitrogen, oxygen and carbon dioxide help to provide an optimum quality process water.
